On Friday, June 24, after many years of service, councilors John Gould and Jerome "Jerry" Dobson stepped down as Chair and President, respectively, at the American Geographical Society (AGS). Taking their place will be Dr. Christopher Tucker as Chairman, and Dr. Marie Price as President. In the article "Changing of the Guard," written by AGS Vice President Dr. Deborah Popper, she reviews the last 40 years of AGS history.

Dr. Popper highlights the pivotal roles of Dr. Dobson and Mr. Gould in steering the Society "through rapidly changing times, times that demanded responses without signaling clearly what direction to take."

As the article reflects on the past with respect and appreciation, Dr. Popper writes also of the eagerness to know what the future holds as AGS welcomes in Dr. Marie Price, the Society's first female President, and Dr. Christopher Tucker, its new Chairman.

Submit Your Great Ideas for Geography2050

Save the date! November 17 and 18, 2016 at Columbia University in New York City is theAmerican Geographical Society’s (AGS) 2016 Fall Symposium. This year’s theme isGeography2050: Envisioning a Sustainable Planet. Geography2050 is a multi-year strategic dialogue about the vital trends that will reshape the geography of our planet by 2050.

Rather than exploring predictions of the future, as in years past, this year AGS seeks to collaboratively and constructively map the future geography of conservation, restoration, and sustainability. This year’s symposium seeks to bring the best minds together to map and shape a future where our ecosystems and vital resources should be conserved, restored, and sustainably managed for the betterment of humankind and the Earth.

The symposium will be comprised of sessions dedicated to particular dimensions of the global geography that each face and their own challenges with regard to conservation, restoration, and sustainability. The topics that will be covered at the symposium will be:Arctic, Conservation and Indigenous Peoples, Energy, Forests, Food Production and the Natural Landscape, Iconic Species Ranges, Oceans, Poverty, Development & Sustainability, Urban Ecosystems and Watersheds. We encourage anyone who specializes in any of these areas and has an interest in being a speaker at the symposium to contact ags@americangeo.org for more information.

Rather than a formal Call for Papers, the Geography2050 Program Committee would like to request that you take time to submit your ideas for great speakers, lighting talks, compelling maps and datasets, or any other kind of content that you believe would help drive this strategic dialog.  Just email them to Submissions@geography2050.org. Please email those ideas before July 30, so that our Program Committee can take them in to consideration.

Introducing AGS Newest Fellow
Nathaniel Becker Chase
Becker is a Managing Director at yet2Ventures.  He is responsible for the firm's investment themes, origination strategy, and industry coverage. He also serves as either a member or an observer on the board of directors of Yet2Ventures’ portfolio companies.  Prior to joining yet2Ventures, Becker worked at Booz & Company where he was seconded to a private equity fund led by a former senior partner from Goldman Sachs and focused on global growth opportunities.  Becker managed teams for origination, due-diligence, valuation and financial modeling, and presentations to the Investment Committee. His work covered energy, mining, infrastructure, media, and business services across North American, Brazil, and Asia.  While at Booz & Company, Becker also worked in the Energy, Chemicals, & Utilities Practice, supporting Fortune 500 executives in operational improvements, cost-cutting efforts, and marketing strategy.  Becker came to Booz through the acquisition of his prior firm, Katzenbach Partners in 2009

“Over my years as an investor and advisor to companies, I have been continually impressed by the power of geospatial sensors, data, and analytics to bring about new levels of efficiency, reliability, and safety for the enterprise customers that we focus on,” Becker said, when asked about his motivations for joining.  “Looking ahead, my partners and I see a coming wave of new entrants built on a geospatial foundation (though not outwardly positioned as such) – as well as larger, more established competitors seeking to reinvent themselves.  I’m excited to work closely with the AGS Council to marshal leaders from across a variety industries that together can harness the power of geography to advance the economy of our nation and our world.”  Becker also reflected on more personal motivations, as a descendent and namesake of Nathaniel Bowditch, author of The American Practical Navigator , a book first published in 1802 and one that continues to be used to this day.  “I am inspired by the opportunity to help carry on the Bowditch legacy – a quiet and enduring example of how practical, self-taught, and thoughtfully shared knowledge can improve our society. His life and work is a standard worth following.”

Becker has a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University and is an alumnus of Phillips Exeter Academy. Becker has been recognized as a Carnegie New Leader and has served on several non-profit boards. Becker was recently named a Kauffman Fellow (Class 21), a program designed to develop a world-wide network of innovation investors who provide smart, connected capital to fuel entrepreneurial change. Becker lives in New York City and endeavors to maintain his status as an active sailor.
