Kelly Riling, who manages the AppleTree Early Learning Teacher Residency in Washington, D.C. was featured in a Bellwether Education Partners newsletter. AppleTree’s unique model, which exclusively prepares early educators, has been cited as an important contributor to Washington, D.C.’s pre-K system, which is one of the country’s best-funded, most comprehensive early childhood education programs. With Bellwether, AppleTree discussed how it has overcome common challenges facing residencies, such as funding issues, expanding its pool of mentor teachers, and recruiting high-quality candidates.

Call for Proposals

The New Teacher Center is accepting proposals for presentations for its annual symposium, to be held Feb. 9-11 in Atlanta. The conference’s theme is “ACCELERATE: Collective Impact for Equity in Education.” The organization is seeking proposals that have one or more of the following as a focus: Developing the Whole Child: Equity in Action; The Intersection: Coaching, Curriculum, & Rigorous State Standards; Teachers as Leaders: Recruiting, Developing, & Sustaining; System Leadership: Pathway to Impact. Video Resource: Teacher Educator Professional Development

The mentor-resident relationship is the foundation of the residency model. In order to ensure the success of these relationships, residency programs must provide their mentors with training and professional development that enables them to develop residents into effective new teachers.

However, new mentors and veteran mentors need different kinds of support and training. Effective residencies differentiate their offerings to meet the needs of each.

We sat down with our program partners in Richmond and Dallas to learn about the key components of an effective mentor professional development program. This month, NCTR is featuring three new videos on the topic:
  1. Discussing the core practices of effective teacher educator professional development programs
  2. Identifying the skills and attributes that successful residencies seek to develop in their teacher educators
  3. How residencies can best differentiate their professional development for new and veteran mentors.
You can access the videos through the Resources for New and Existing Residencies page on our website. Look for the "Video Library" drop down menus. They’re also available for viewing and sharing on our YouTube channel. A user’s guide highlights the main idea of each video series and suggested audiences for the key messages.

The resource library was funded through NCTR’s 2015 Supporting Effective Educator Development grant from the U.S. Department of Education. These videos are made available to members of the NCTR Network and other educators and advocates as part of our commitment to support a high quality network of teacher residencies and to share best practices and lessons learned with the teacher preparation field.

Next month we will close out the video project with videos on the Residency Year Curriculum.
