RTR and the Boettcher Teacher Residency share how they identify and address the professional development needs of their graduates.
What's New at NCTR?
NCTR has received a $649,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to support the Mississippi Department of Education in the development of the nation’s first state-run teacher residency. The grant will also fund strategies to better recruit and retain African-American male teachers and provide support to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. The Mississippi Department of Education will oversee the program’s development and will operate the residency when it is fully functional.
“States are increasingly recognizing the residency model as an effective way to address teacher shortages and to develop diverse, committed educators for underserved communities,” said Anissa Listak, NCTR’s founder and CEO. “The Mississippi Teacher Residency is a unique opportunity to build a state-led teacher residency with partners who are focused on developing high-quality teachers for students who need them most.”
Mississippi state Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright said the project will address two pressing issues: Teacher quality and teacher retention.
“When we looked at the data on teacher retention among teachers trained in residencies, we immediately saw residencies as a strategic way to provide teacher candidates with high-quality training and keep those teachers in classrooms – something we need in Mississippi,” said Dr. Carey Wright, Mississippi State Superintendent of Education.

Video Resource: Graduate Professional Development
After graduating from a teacher residency, new teachers receive individualized, ongoing support and coaching for several years. This component of the residency model is a big reason why teacher residency graduates stay in the profession much longer than typical new teachers. How graduates receive this support and training – as well as identifying the types of training they need most – is an important part of this high quality pathway.
This month, NCTR is featuring three new videos on effective professional development for residency graduates. We sat down with our program partners at RTR (formerly the Richmond Teacher Residency) and the Boettcher Teacher Residency to learn about how they identify the professional development needs of their graduates and how they tailor their offerings to meet those needs.
The resource library was funded through NCTR’s 2015 Supporting Effective Educator Development grant from the U.S. Department of Education. As part of our commitment to support a high quality network of teacher residencies and to share the best practices and lessons learned with the teacher preparation field, these videos are being made available to members of the NCTR Network of teacher residencies and other educators and advocates.
