Chase Two Rabbits
“Chase Two Rabbits"

Do you rarely (if ever) achieve your Quality Goals?
Do your Quality Goals all look equally desirable and equally unachievable?
Are there question from management about this apparently stationary Quality Program?

If you chase two rabbits at once, you will catch neither.    This translates as "If you try to do two things at the same time, you will not succeed in doing either of them" and is an old English Proverb.  Someone sent this to me in another context but it applies to Quality Assurance so thoroughly I had to borrow it.

For those who are in a startup trying to 'do' Quality Assurance or starting up Quality Assurance in an existing organisation there is so much to do and so many goals for the Quality Assurance function that it is difficult to know where to start.  Add to that the interdependence between some of the goals and one feels that one is not chasing two rabbits but chasing many rabbits and not catching any of them. Remember your job description probably also includes the word 'multitasking' at some point and you are actually being asked to chase multiple little rabbits.

It is time to be absolutely ruthless on what is achievable and what can be realised within a reasonable time frame.  Pick one rabbit (or at most two), add a time limit and go after those one or two and catch them!  As soon as the first one is caught, pick the next one on the list and go after that one.  You will soon find that the list is shrinking, the rabbits are getting easier to catch and you are achieving your Quality Assurance goals.  For those who want some suggestions on Quality Assurance goals, see our most recent blogs.
