September is here,
and Fall is around the corner. But we're not quite ready for the pumpkin flavors to take over.  Enjoy the beautiful weather, and enjoy the last bit of summer before we figure out the fall normals.  Schools are starting in so many different ways, people working from home, and people are trying to get back in the rhythm from vacations.
While the numbers of positive cases has slowed a bit, people are still coming back to town, so please remain vigilant and stay safe.

Today is the State Primary! Polling locations are open from 7am - 8pm.  If you haven't mailed in your ballot, drop it off at City Hall in the dropbox before 8pm!  Some polling places have changed, but in the West End, it is the same, Amy Lowell House, 65 Martha Rd.

We are going to be reaching out to the neighborhood about new virtual programming and looking for people to get involved!
Stay tuned!

Be kind, be safe, be healthy, and spread the love!

Friends of the West End Library hope each of you have remained well and have been able to adapt to the new normal. We have adapted and will be holding our upcoming September 10th (PLEASE NOTE THE REVISED DATE) meeting via Zoom. To register, please email our board member Jean Lawrence (jean.lawr@yahoo.com) to confirm your 6 pm attendance.

The meal program is back!

Many of you remember the monthly celebrations and weekly Friday meal. Unfortunately, during these unprecedented times caused by the pandemic, the ABCD North End/West End Neighborhood Service Center (NE/WE NSC) cannot have gatherings in the community room at this time, and is closely monitoring city and state guidelines on when it will be again safe to do so. Meanwhile, they are grateful for the support and friendship of the North End Rehabilitation and Health Care Center on Fulton Street in the North End, in particular Sami Almadi, Administrator/Executive Director, and Edmond Cormier, Admission Director, as well as General Manger Richie Zapato of Pizzeria Regina’s on Thacher Street, for their regular monthly meal donations

The community food program has expanded.
These are unprecedented times, as the pandemic continues after all these months. The NE/WE NSC has increased its donations of fresh produce, non-perishables, and other household staples. Would you or someone you know find some groceries helpful? This program is open to all friends and neighbors in the community. So what are you waiting for? Call 617-523-8125 to schedule a contactless pick up of food by appointment! All are welcome!

Boston Public Schools Plan
BPS is contacting all families to ask your selection between hybrid and remote learning.

If you haven't heard from them or have a question,
call 617-635-9520 or email reopening@bostonpublicschools.org

BPS has decided that all students will begin the school year learning remotely. We will responsibly and safely phase into the hybrid model of learning starting Thursday, October 1. The hybrid model allows students to learn in person two days a week and learn remotely three days a week. Families with students who have not opted in to the hybrid model, and plan to learn remotely five days a week, will not lose their spot. After all students begin remote learning on September 21, the phases for rolling into in-person learning will begin no sooner than the dates listed below. The two dates represent the planned different first days for students in Group A and Group B. More information about these assignments will be shared in the coming weeks.

Pancetta Parmesan Corn Chowder

recipe courtesy of Andrea Loret de Mola from the feed feed.com

Makes 4-6 servings
  • 4 ears of corn, kernels removed, cobs reserved
  • 3 cups chickens stock
  • 1/2 lemon, zested
  • 1 (3 inch) piece of parmesan cheese rind
  • 6 ounces diced pancetta or bacon
  • 1 medium spanish onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced or minced
  • 11/2 tablespoons whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 3 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, diced
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • Kosher salt, to taste.
  • Coarsely cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Chives, thinly sliced for garnish
  • Shaved Parmesan cheese, for serving

METHOD

  • STEP 1

Using the back of a butter knife, scrape down the cob into a stock pot, releasing the excess liquid and any extra kernels left over on the cob. Once done, the cobs should look dry and be free of any corn pieces. To make the corn stock add the chicken stock to the scraped corn mixture, cut cobs, parmesan rind and lemon zest. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Once the flavors have melded together, remove the corn cobs, shaking out any excess stock, discard the cobs and if you desire you can strain the stock.

  • STEP 2

While the corn stock is cooking, make the base of the soup. In a Dutch oven, render out the pancetta/bacon fat over medium high heat. Cook until browned and crispy. Using a slotted spoon, remove pancetta bits and reserve for topping. To the rendered fat, add the onions and garlic and cook until softened and fragrant, 5-6 min. Add the whole grain mustard and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  • STEP 3

Deglaze the pan with white wine, and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add corn kernels, potatoes and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.

  • STEP 4

Add 3 cups of reserved corn stock, bring to a boil and then reduce to simmer for 20 minutes.

  • STEP 5

Once the potatoes are tender, add heavy cream and stir to combine. Remove from heat and using an immersion blender, blend the soup for 10-20 seconds making sure to leave some potatoes and corn intact. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • STEP 6

Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with reserved pancetta, thinly sliced chives and parmesan cheese curls.
