Join us at the Community Cup November 25-27

Foundation for Community Health and the Glacier Ice Rink are on the move to score for the health of western Montana with another great Community Cup Hockey Benefit Thanksgiving weekend. The Community Cup was created by Dr. Tim and Tonda Richards a handful of years ago to promote health and community engagement. The Community Cup includes team competition, a lively Chuck-a-Puck contest and, this year, a pediatric patient toy drive. The teams that take to the ice are recruited with the Ty Robinson Rules, which bring together women and men across an array of medical and community professions, ages, and playing expertise. Proceeds over time have benefitted pediatric and neonatal care, Safe Kids injury prevention education, and Glacier Ice Rink programs. The 2016 Community Cup proceeds will provide healthcare scholarships and professional development through our Foundation in celebration of our Chairman Emeritus and “Centennial Man” Ty Robinson, and support the Glacier Ice Rink bleacher project.

We hope that you will bundle up and come out to see us at the Community Cup November 25 through 27 at Glacier Ice Rink. If you have questions about the event, please call the Foundation office at 406.926.2522 or email foundation@fchwmt.org. If you are interested in playing in the tournament, email ryan@glaciericerink.com.
Safeguard Your Medication, Safeguard Your Home
Did you know 49% of the 1.24 million calls made to poison centers each year for children are medicine-related? Medications are the leading cause of child poisoning. Children are curious by nature and most cases of medicine poisoning happened when a child got into medicines during a moment alone. In addition to the risk of medicine poisoning among children, medicine misuse and abuse is a concern for older children and teens, with more than 5% of Montana children age 12-18 years having used a prescription drug for a nonmedical purpose.

Join us at a free, Medication Safety Community Conversation on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30PM in the Gallagher Board Room at Community Medical Center to hear what Missoula area pharmacists, police detectives and prevention experts recommend to keep children safe from medicine poisoning.

This event is hosted by Safe Kids Missoula and the Prescription Drug Task Force of the Missoula Forum for Children and Youth. Please email Safe Kids Missoula Co-Coordinator, Kira Huck, at kirah@fchwmt.org to RSVP or if you have questions about the event.
Safe Kids Spotlight: Moms Demand Action-MT and the Be SMART Campaign
Each month, we feature one of our Coalition partners and share information about the important work they do to make safety a community priority in western Montana. This month, our Safe Kids Spotlight is on Moms Demand Action-MT and the Be SMART campaign.

Moms Demand Action and the Be SMART campaign work to prevent gun violence and keep children safe from unintentional shootings. At least 100 children die each year from an unintentional shooting and 400 die from suicide by gun. Be SMART encourages adults to keep all guns locked, unloaded and (S)tored separately from ammunition, (M)odel responsible behavior around guns, (A)sk about the presence of guns in homes children may visit, (R)ealize the risk of teenage suicide when guns are present and (T)alk to those you know about being smart. By following these important steps, unintentional shootings can be avoided.

Learn more about Moms Demand Action-MT at momsdemandaction.org or on Facebook. You can email Dannette Fadness about a Be SMART presentation. Learn more about Safe Kids Missoula and ways you can get involved at fchwmt.org/safe-kids-missoula.
