Let’s do #mas4LA!
– the LA-Más team

We launched Storefronts, LA and RELAUNCHED Small Business Design Program!

This month, we launched Storefronts, LA – an initiative supported by FOUND/LA, a project of the Wurwand Foundation – to support minority business owners throughout Los Angeles. With rapid changes taking place across LA, small businesses in low-moderate income communities of color are vulnerable to displacement. Through low-cost, high-impact designs, Storefronts, LA will help business owners enhance their visibility, highlight their products and services, increase their revenue, and continue to serve their community — all while reflecting neighborhood history and culture.

We are proud to partner with local business development organizations that are committed to connecting us with eligible and interested business owners and providing ongoing support in conjunction with Storefronts, LA. These organizations include: Inclusive Action for the City; Los Angeles Food Policy Council; Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program; Opportunity Fund; Managed Career Solutions (MCS); and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office of Community Business

In partnership with Council District 15, we’ve also relaunched our On Avalon Small Business Design Program in Wilmington! This program is an expansion of the Small Business Support Program we led in 2017, during which we worked with nearly a dozen businesses to strengthen the historic heart of Wilmington and promote economic development. Learn more about the first phase of our work here. We’ve begun canvassing small businesses on Avalon Blvd and are beginning to partner with business owners who are interested in receiving free storefront re-designs. We look forward to updating you on our progress over the coming months!

If you or anyone you know can benefit from either of our programs, get in touch at!

Backyard Homes is expanding to the County of LA!

The LA County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to invest $1.5 million in the expansion of the Backyard Homes Project to unincorporated LA County! This investment will result in the construction of 12-15 Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to address the severe housing shortage in Los Angeles. The completed ADUs will create additional homes for individuals at risk of falling into homelessness. We’ll be working closely with the County of LA as we develop the details of this expansion.

Thank you Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas for championing this effort! We are excited to expand our program to the County of LA with the LA County Development Authority.

Save the date for Pizza Party! (October 24th)

The 5th Annual LA-Más Fundraiser will be a “Pizza Party!” We’ll be hosting the event at LA River Studios on October 24 from 6-9PM and we hope to see you there. As always, we are excited to see how this celebration brings together our favorite people in honor of the work we do to shape a more inclusive city. Make sure to save the date and stay tuned for details on our honorees and event details!

Congratulations to LA-Más team members!

A chapter closes and a new one begins. Our incredible Community & Policy team members are moving forward into the next chapter of their lives. Avital will be starting her new role as program officer for the San Diego LISC and return to a community she plans to call home. Alejandro is embarking on a Masters of Urban Planning at UCLA with the goal of learning more about real estate financing and affordable housing development. We will miss our colleagues so much and are excited about their next chapter. Our work has been shaped by these two and it will not be the same without them.

Our City of LA ADU Pilot Project in Highland Park was a team effort with a host of amazing partners. Within the dedicated project team, some members truly went above and beyond. We’re proud that our very own Chaz was anointed as an MVP on the project by the Mayor’s Innovation Team.

Our Co-Executive Director Elizabeth was 1 of 40 movers-and-shakers recently selected to attend the Next City Vanguard Conference, an experiential urban leadership gathering, in Sacramento. This is a prestigious honor given to “high-achieving candidates from the most influential organizations in the urban sphere.”

Join us! We're looking for an Architectural Drafter.

Our design team is looking for a freelancer who can offer architectural drafting support on an as-needed basis. We are looking for an individual to help out on our housing projects who is Revit/Rhino fluent and has experience with construction drawings. Forward along your portfolios and resumes here to apply to work with us as a freelance draftsperson!
