Lillian Borrone Recipient of the 2023 Frank Turner Award

Lillian Borrone has been awarded the 2023 Frank Turner Medal as a trailblazer for women in transportation and for her substantial professional and volunteer contributions to transportation policy, administration, and research that have aided in the advancement of safer and more reliable mobility for people and goods. The medal will be presented during the Chair’s Plenary Session on Wednesday, January 11 at the 2023 TRB Annual Meeting.

Preparing for LNG by Rail Tank Car: A Readiness Review (TRB Special Report 345). Shipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail tank car is a viable mode in U.S. regions where the natural gas pipeline network is limited. Before the first bulk shipment of LNG by rail tank car, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends a review of the research and testing done so far on safety assurance, especially for the design of the tank car, and follow up with activities if warranted.

  • A promising, inexpensive system to overcome GPS hacking that could help keep self-driving vehicles from heading the wrong destination has been developed by University of Alabama researchers. They wrote about it in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal.
  • Opportunities within the new infrastruction act abound for "building information modeling," or BIM, to help transportation agencies work smarter, more efficiently and more strategically. TRB Volunteer Alexa Mitchell of HDR shares more details in TRB's magazine TR News.
