WORKING WITH YOUNG HORSES

RIDING PATTERNS

Small Circles

  • a 3-5 meter circle with head tipped in

  • a 3-5 meter circle with head tipped out (counterbend)

  • 🔑Massage the ribs with your inside leg (calf) and get the horse to curl their ribs around your calf of (give). Note when the ribs soften and relax - relax your leg & stop massaging

Figure 8 (tip the nose to get their neck to relax)

  • Do it for 2-3 minutes then go straight

  • Walk them out and let their belly sway

  • 🔑Pump (not bump) your legs as if flagging their sides to put energy into them and give them cadence

SELECTING A STALLION BASED ON COLOR

Breeding season is nearly over for many breeders and selecting the right stallion for your mare to get your favorite color can be a challenge. The most effective strategy is to have a color panel done on your mare and request a copy of the stallions color panel. Animal Genetics is our go to for color panels. Here you can find a color calculator to really get an idea of what color your foal may be. Have fun and may you get the foal color of your dreams!
