Message to Families
April 12, 2021
Dear Families,

Many in our community feel strong emotions after learning that Daunte Wright, a young Black man, was shot and killed by police yesterday in Brooklyn Center. I am angry and outraged and feel profound sadness and desperation for racial violence, especially at the hands of police, to stop.

While some schools in the area pivoted to distance learning and kept students home, at this time, we are choosing to keep all of our schools open because I believe that our students need the sense of predictability and structure of being in community with their school staff. If you are a resident of Brooklyn Center or Brooklyn Park, please watch for information from your resident district about any changes to your student’s transportation schedule.

Please visit our website for information and resources for families about racial injustice and police violence.

I send my deepest condolences to the family of Daunte Wright. My thoughts are also with our staff and students who are deeply impacted by his death.

Most sincerely,

Sandy Lewandowski
