Inspiration for This Week's Practices...

The effects of karma have been circling my head lately -- the belief that there is a cause and effect for all actions in the universe. The current state of our nation's health, the out of control fires in the western states, and the deep, hurtful racial discord are all effects that are easily traced toward root causes. However, because the term "karma" is so often used colloquially and interchanged with punitive results, I'm inspired to delve into its deeper meaning and wisdom this week.

I am revisiting a book that I picked up during my yoga teacher training a few years ago called Karma: The Ancient Science of Cause and Effect by Jeffrey Armstrong. In it, the author begins with the statement: "Of all the subjects that are crucial to us human beings, karma--or ultimate cause and effect--is one of the most vitally important. Karma is about all the things we do, and the results of that doing."

There is also a branch of yoga known as karma yoga. Karma yoga begins with an overarching philosophy and science of karma and asks us as humans to employ our actions toward positive ends. Karma yoga entails living a good life, offering actions and service to all living beings, our environment, and even ourselves.

This week we will offer ourselves a nourishing practice designed to open our bodies and minds to positive thinking and action, a little karma yoga on the mat. After all, the greater good begins in our own hearts and minds.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced yogi, you'll benefit from this Gentle Flow series. In each practice, I offer yoga inspiration and principles and gently guide you through stretches, poses, and breathwork to allow your body and mind to release and relax. Adaptions and modifications are offered so there is something for everyone!

Tip of the Week:

The breath that you invoke during yoga practice can benefit you greatly off the mat as well. When stress or anxiety threaten to elevate your heart rate or cause you to feel depressed, saddened, or fearful, take a moment, close the eyes, and inhale deeply--yet softly. Exhale the same way. Repeat this several more times. This simple act which you can employ anywhere, anytime telegraphs a calming effect to the brain, which says to the parasympathetic nervous system "I am ok."

How people treat you is their karma. How you react is your karma.” — The Buddha
