10 Years of Extraordinary Leadership in Corporate Counsel Externship Program

The Corporate Counsel Externship Program, now considered a premier externship program, was founded in fall 2013 by Professor Marc I. Steinberg and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Stephen B. Yeager. The academic program combines a corporate counsel course with externships in corporate legal departments. The program began with 30 students in 30 companies and has grown to 100 students in 100 companies. Professor Steinberg and Dean Yeager are planning to make this year’s decade-marking semester a special one for students and companies.

The Law School will celebrate Underwood Law Library’s 50th anniversary on March 31, from 12:20-1:20 p.m. Enjoy a brief musical performance by two highly talented 3Ls before Lawrence Lessig, a nationally recognized constitutional law scholar and the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, delivers a talk on “A Minoritarian Democracy.” Lunch will be provided and a brief reception will follow. On Tuesday, February 15, the Office of Public Service brought together three of our exceptional alumni, Harriet Miers '70 (Former White House Counsel), Erin Nealy Cox '95 (Former U.S. Attorney – NDTX), and District Attorney John Creuzot '82, to speak with current students and attorneys in the community about their experiences working in the public sector and the remarkable impact it had on their careers. Competition will be held virtually via Zoom in the evenings of Monday, April 11 - Thursday, April 14 (6:00 p.m. and/or 8:00 p.m. slots). A judge's packet including a bench brief and a series of suggested questions will be emailed in advance. Check-in will begin 30 minutes before each round. If you are able to volunteer for one or more rounds, please email jwmcb@smu.edu by Tuesday, April 5.
