Researchers, Nurse Nominated
For LLS Woman of the Year

Cancer Institute researchers Samantha Kendrick, Ph.D., (pictured  top left), Carolina Schinke, M.D., (pictured top right) and Laura Phillips, R.N., (pictured bottom row) have been nominated as candidates for Woman of the Year by the Little Rock Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Recognition in the LLS’s Man and Woman of the Year campaign is the highest honor bestowed on a volunteer by the organization.
Dr. Kendrick is an associate professor in the College of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her laboratory is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms behind aggressive forms of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and discovering new therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcome.

Dr. Schinke is an associate professor in College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine. Her research interest is to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to progression to multiple myeloma (MM), thereby focusing on genetic and phenotypic changes within malignant plasma cells and on alterations of the MM surrounding bone marrow microenvironment.

Laura Phillips has been a nurse for more than 44 years, with about 37 of those years at UAMS. She has served at the Myeloma Center for 15 years, where she said she found her “true love” of working with myeloma patients.

The Little Rock Chapter of LLS has a goal of raising more than $300,000 through the campaign to help fund critical services like patient financial aid and research projects. In the last two years, LLS has given more than $1.8 million in direct financial assistance to Arkansans battling blood cancer.

Recipients of the Man and Woman of the Year awards will be announced at the organization’s Grand Finale Gala on May 16.
