Evers Using Road Funds for Off-road Trails, Bike Paths, Harbor Dredging and More

A few months ago, I wrote about Governor Evers potentially taking $75 million supplement that the Legislature allocated for local roads to pay for the Milwaukee streetcar. This week, we learned how Evers intends to use those road funds. Before the program even took applications, he awarded $1.75 million for a bridge in Kaukuana. The Legislature had already approved this program, but the Governor is using the local road supplement rather than the Local Bridge Account.

Despite the Legislature’s desire that this supplement be used for local roads to help clean up the backlog of maintenance, these road funds will be used for off-road hiking trails, bike paths and lanes, and more. Railroad expansion, harbor dredging and dock wall repairs are also eligible under Evers’ program.

The good news is streetcar operations are not eligible for the grant. Unfortunately, streetcar infrastructure is eligible.

For someone who said he wanted to “fix the damn roads,” Evers is sure finding other ways to spend the road money.

DOT Public Meeting to Discuss Reconstruction of WIS 50 in Village of Paddock Lake

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is holding a Public Involvement Meeting for the upcoming reconstruction of WIS 50 in the Village of Paddock Lake, Kenosha County. The purpose of this meeting is to inform residents and property owners about the WIS 50 reconstruction project and to obtain input on this project.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, September 26th from 5-7pm in the Westosha High School multipurpose room.  Westosha High School is located at: 24617 75th Street in Salem.

The construction will occur for approximately 1.4 miles and stretches from 256th Ave to 263rd Ave on WIS 50.  The project will include the replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, improve drainage, replace sidewalk handicap ramps, add on-road bicycle accommodations, replace retaining walls on the north side of WIS 50 between 248th Ave and 246th Ave, and improve signal visibility by installing monotubes at the WIS 83 and 246th Avenue intersections.
