Dear Ascension Public Schools Family,

As we are approximately four weeks away from the start of a new school year, I would like to share with you some of the exciting things that have been taking place over the summer (other than tropical storm weather).

Mastery+By now, you should have received state testing results for your student. Our district as a whole achieved 54% in Mastery and Above on state testing. We are one of only four districts across the state to reach over 50%, but most importantly, we grew two percentage points overall!

Congratulations to our students as their commitment to learning and giving their best effort is a significant factor in the ongoing success we all enjoy. We are honored to be a part of their journey toward graduation and their pursuit of excellence. A big high five also goes out to our teachers, school leaders, and district instructional leaders who support daily classroom experiences. And lastly, we all agree that the opportunity to celebrate ongoing improvement is the result of a commitment to teamwork, so hats off to all Ascension employees, our parents and the community for their dedicated service that ensures quality experiences for children at every touchpoint.

Summer has been a very busy time for our district in terms of construction and maintenance projects. Here are some of the latest updates:
  • APPLe Digital Academy is moving from its Darrow location to a newly renovated campus in Sorrento, formally the RPCC Technical Campus on Airline Highway.
  • The third and and final phase of Ascension Head Start's renovation will be complete with a brand new building, cafeteria and play area.
  • The new Bullion Primary School will open this Fall. Plans are for partial occupancy on Aug. 8 with full occupancy by the end of the 1st nine weeks.
  • Dutchtown Primary will open a brand new two-story classroom building this year. It replaces numerous temporary buildings that were removed over the summer.
  • Lowery Elementary will open with a brand new, separate entrance from the middle school.
  • Lowery Middle will have an additional classroom wing in addition to its remodeled entrance.
  • There are 20 school and office sites undergoing security upgrades this summer with an additional four projects soon to begin.
  • Our Maintenance Department is investing $2 million of its budget in school improvement projects such as concrete parking lots, new concrete driveways, bus load canopy extensions, re-roofing, classroom flooring upgrades and a severe weather and outdoor warning system at our four high schools.
In addition to these many projects, we expect the 2019-20 school year will see the completion of St. Amant High's office and entrance renovation and a new Residency Verification and Truancy Office building for the district. We also expect numerous additional projects to be completed for the 2020-21 school year. For a complete and detailed status update, visit

In closing, I hope you make the most out of these final weeks of summer. Enjoy the time with your children and know that we are working very hard to make sure this upcoming school year is their best year ever!
