Congratulations PhD and MS Graduates!!
Message to 2020 Graduates
Dear QBS 2020 Graduates,
Congratulations on your graduation! Whether you are graduating with a PhD or a MS, this is a fantastic accomplishment and on behalf of QBS Administration and the entire QBS community we send you our best wishes.
This is an exciting moment. Our new QBS Drs: Yasmin Kamal, Kathy Antosca, David Chen, and Jason Wells have reached the pinnacle of the graduate study with their Ph.D. degrees. They did so in unique fashion with Yasmin’s defense occurring on the brink of the shutdown, the last of our Rubin 6th floor rotunda gatherings for at least a while, and subsequently with Kathy, David and Jason bringing in the era of zoom defenses. A Ph.D. represents years of hard work and unique challenges to overcome. Obtaining one is a transformational moment; you are now certified as capable of performing cutting-edge research and making progress on previously unsolved problems. You now join our PhD Alumni, joining a group of 16, and are ambassadors of the QBS PhD and the QBS program as a whole. We look forward to hearing of your future accomplishments and hosting your future visits back to campus, as we do all our Alumni.
In Fall 2018, 20 of our QBS students embarked on an uncharted journey. The first MS cohort comprised 18 students in the Health Data Science concentration and 2 in the Epidemiology concentration. There were unforeseen challenges and valuable on-the-go learning experiences! But the rewards far outweighed the challenges. Through this journey you trusted us and gave valuable feedback, helping to enhance your experience and our program for years to come.
We started celebrating successful MS completions in September 2019 when Depy Karalis’, one of our two 4+1 students, became our very first graduate. When several of you finished last December I remember standing on a chair, my usual speech-giving pose, in the rotunda on the 6th floor of Rubin reminding you that the QBS MS provides you with a skillset that is highly applicable in the current time but more importantly one that can readily adapt to the future. I had no idea of the international and the national challenges just around the corner. In light of these challenges, this point is highly salient. There is now unprecedented need for the quantitative skills underlying your training including in relation to data science; extraction and science; statistical practice; epidemiological design; informatics and machine/deep learning; effective communication and professional presentation. Yes, it is a changed world. But it is a world in which you are equipped to succeed!
We sincerely hope that all who are graduating use the training received at Dartmouth to fulfill your career ambitions and to make a positive difference in the world. We wish you all the best and look forward to hearing about your future adventures. From all of us at QBS, a big hearty congratulations to our 2020 QBS PhD and MS graduates and now new QBS Alumni!
A special thank you goes to Todd MacKenzie for foundational work in establishing and running the MS program – had the ceremony been held in-person, Todd would have awarded the MS students’ caps – and to all QBS faculty for their many contributions to QBS’ success. A special thanks to the QBS Administrative team: Shaniqua Jones (Program Director), Krissy Giffin (Curriculum Director) and Rosemary White (Program Coordinator) for contributing so expertly to QBS and always being ready ahead of time for every eventuality.
