Nelson Nature Fix

Welcome to the Nelson Nature Fix - a regular snippet about Nelson's natural environment, and what we can do to look after it.  If you know anyone who you think might enjoy getting a regular nature fix, please pass this on and encourage them to sign up. You can read back issues here.

Last community planting opportunity of the year!

If you haven't had a chance to take part in a  community tree planting this year, join us at the Brook Stream, Tantragee Reserve on Sunday 3 September.

This year’s community planting days have seen a great response from many groups and individuals who have worked hard to help restore our streams through the planting of riparian margins.

Planting is one of the most important things we can do to help improve stream health and habitat. Planting native trees and shrubs along the stream banks helps prevent erosion, provides shade to reduce water temperature and produces natural debris which helps to create a rich, diverse fish habitat.

Staff from Z Fuel Stoke hard at work planting at Orchard Stream

Over the last few weeks we've seen the Rotary Club doing great work planting in Isel Park and at Tahunanui, and Nelson Mountain Bike Club have been hard at work in the Tantragee Reserve.  Forest and Bird held a planting day at Orphanage Stream, and the staff from Z Fuel in Stoke undertook a highly successful planting day at Orchard Stream. Numerous school plantings have also taken place throughout the region.

Brook Stream, Tantragee Reserve – Community Planting Day

If you’d like to be part of this great effort, join us on the banks of the Brook Stream in the Tantragee Reserve from 11am, Sunday 3 September.

Project Maitai will provide the fuel you will need to do the job, with a barbeque and cups of tea.  We will have stream ecologists on hand to talk about the Brook Stream and its habitat.  Wear solid footwear and gloves and bring a spade if you have one (though we will also have some on hand).  If wet, the alternative planting date will be Sunday 10 September from 11 am.
