Aloha Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i,

We are excited to present the 2018 Hawai‘i Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year!

The 2018 Big Brother of the Year has been awarded to Jason Fujita, Vice President in Consumer Sales and Product Marketing with Hawaiian Telcom. Jason was matched with Little Brother Ryan in March 2013. Ryan would tell his mom that he wished he had a brother and after several years, Ryan’s mom reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Ryan was hesitant to meet an adult big brother, but when they met, Jason and Ryan were a perfect match! Click here to read more about Jason and Ryan’s story.

The 2018 Big Sister of the Year award has been presented to Jessica Chiu, Realtor Broker Associate for Locations, LLC and Owner of JC Functions. Jessica and Little Sister, Karen were matched in November 2013. To help Karen through a difficult time, she decided to enroll in the program to have someone to be “in her corner”. When Karen met Jessica, she instantly felt it was a start to a lifelong relationship with her very own Big Sister.  Click here to read more about Jessica and Karen’s story.

Congratulations to Jason and Jessica! Your dedication to your Little, the organization and to building a long-term meaningful friendship is truly inspiring.

With gratitude and aloha,

Dennis Brown
President / CEO
(and Hawaii's first "Little Brother")

"I knew I needed to find someone for Ryan to talk to.  I called Big Brothers Big Sisters, found more about the program and decided to give a shot.  I asked them to find a Big Brother for my son. On the day of his match meeting Ryan was so nervous about meeting a stranger and afraid that his Big wouldn't like him that he told me he didn't want a Big.  However as soon as he met Jason his attitude changed.  They had a chance to talk on their own for 30 minutes and when Ryan returned to the room he gave me this eye expression which seemed to say everything went well.  I was so relieved and so thankful that Ryan had finally found brother!"
- Cyndi, LB Ryan's Mother
"I now can say that I havenʻt dropped below a 4.0 GPA since my freshmen year and am now in many different clubs, associations, and teams at my school. Because of Jessica, I have grown as a person, student and sister. I am so grateful that I got paired with her and I know that this had be fate because a relationship like this couldnʻt have been by coincidence. Surely, it had to be written amongst the stars." - LS Karen
HAWAI‘I ISLAND
On June 9th, some of our East Hawai‘i teen participants attended a “Big Futures” luncheon.  Made possible by funding from the Freeman Foundation, this lunch and learn focused on college awareness, celebrated the 2018 graduates and recognized our School-Based Big Brother of the Year Albert Zuniga of Keaau High School! It has been our privilege to work with such amazing youth like Albert who has been a Big Brother for three years at our Keaau site.  Albert received a scholarship courtesy of Aloha Shoyu & Bottling.
Mahalo to the following Big Futures presenters from the University of Hawaii at Hilo:  Jody Adviento-Turner (Financial Aid Office), Holly Garriques and Melanie Marciel (Advising Center), and Maile Boggeln (Campus & Community Service). They provided great information to our participants!

Maui’s 31st annual Go for the GOLD Bowl for Kids’ Sake was a success thanks for all of our sponsors and community supporters!  We raised over $14,000 for our Maui matches and received additional support through in-kind donations.

In collaboration with the Maui Food Bank, we are participating in our third year of the Summer Food Service Program.  Meals prepared by Simply Healthy Cafe are provided to all Mentor Center program youth, as well other Hale Makana O Waiale residents under the age of 18 every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  It’s been great to be able to fuel our keiki with a balanced meal during these hot summer days!

Surf’s Up!!!  On a bright, beautiful, sunny day, Surfrider Spirit Sessions sponsored a surf activity for our Littles.  There was much to learn about everyday life through surfing and also every single Little was guaranteed to catch a wave and did.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai‘i would like to extend a huge mahalo to the "Brews Your Daddy" team for choosing us as the beneficiary of the Spring 2018 808 Sports Leagues Kickball Champions. Thanks to their generous $500 donation, we can continue to empower the most vulnerable children in our community by matching them with caring volunteers in a 1-to-1 mentoring friendship!
