Walkers Raise Funds for Cancer Research

Walkers from across the region arrived bright and early Saturday, Sept. 28 at Balboa Pavilion in Hot Springs Village to tackle a more than five-mile trek in support of cancer research.
The 18th Annual Village Walk for Cancer Research drew nearly 400 participants who either walked or kayaked the event's course. Since 2002, the walk has raised about $500,000 for research programs at the UAMS Cancer Institute.
One-hundred percent of all proceeds from the walk and an accompanying silent auction support the Cancer Institute’s Seeds of Science program. Seeds of Science is an annual cancer research grant program at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute that provides scientists with “seed” money to initiate research projects and collect data needed to compete for large, national, federal grants.
Laura Hutchins, M.D., interim director of the Cancer Institute, and Samantha Kendrick, Ph.D., a two-time Seeds of Science grant recipient, spoke at the event kickoff to share the value of the program and thank attendees for their support.

It’s time to join Team UAMS for the Susan G. Komen More than Pink Walk! Sign up as part of the Team UAMS walk team here. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the River Market in downtown Little Rock. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 9 a.m.

UAMS is a sponsor of the walk and will have a booth with information regarding breast cancer research and NCI Designation. The MammoVan will also be giving tours and offering information on their upcoming events.
