Followers of Jesus
Advent 2020: Look Up!

In Advent we find our hope in the mystery of great expectation.  As in those days when they suddenly saw the wild star, it was not on any of their star maps.  It went where it wanted to go.  It did not stay put.  Wise ones decided to follow the wild star to see where it was going and what it wanted to show them.  In our ordinary and chaotic lives, in our confusion, grief, danger and uncertainty, and in our desire, joy, love and blessedness,  we proclaim the coming of light in the darkness.  As we actively wait for Jesus we remember all who journey with us towards him, both near and far.

Luke 1: 46-56 (CEB)
46 Mary said,
“With all my heart I glorify the Lord!
47     In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.
48 He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.
Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored
49         because the mighty one has done great things for me.
Holy is his name.
50     He shows mercy to everyone,
from one generation to the next,
        who honors him as God.
51 He has shown strength with his arm.
He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.
52     He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones
        and lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty-handed.
54 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
        remembering his mercy,
55     just as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.

The Giving Tree

It's that time of year for our Giving Tree! This is where you can choose a certain individual to give a gift to this holiday season.  With the help of Compassionate Action, we have 28 individuals who could use some extra things this year. Please fill out this google form with your information and Jordan Steedman will follow up with a person to buy a gift for. The needs vary, but we do request that children are given gifts or gift cards for the parents to buy gifts for their children that will actually be from the parents themselves. This way parents are empowered to give the gifts to their children that they want/need and it will be given from the parents - an opportunity to give something to their child they might not otherwise be able to.

Additionally, gift cards to grocery stores always help (in case all people are taken). Gifts must be returned to Jordan Steedman or Jen Hicks (if you are on the westside) by December 11th. We will send drop-off info to your email when you receive your gift recipient info. Thank you for blessing these individuals, I wish I could capture the gratitude and send it back to you all when these gifts are delivered. Please send any questions to

IRC Update
As we enter this Advent season, we are grateful for you! This year the IRC has been able to assist more clients than ever despite COVID-19 and increased political restrictions and hurdles for our immigrant neighbors. We could not have done it without your faithful support, prayers, and love.

With the shift in the White House in January, we anticipate/hope for a flood of legal options and relief for Dreamers, DACA recipients and undocumented victims of violent crime/domestic abuse. That means we have work to do!

In 2021, we will need more volunteers, interpreters and community connections than ever. We are so glad you walk with us on this exciting journey.
"Spike" Covey finds respite in his/her IRC mug
If you want to be cool like Spike and have your own IRC mug, become a monthly donor at and one will magically show up on your doorstep! To learn more about the Justice Circle and to get invited to 2021 "Coffee Talks" reach out to

If you crave delicious, fair wage coffee for holiday gift giving (or just for you!) check out the IRC's coffee partnership with 3-19 Coffee. Every bag you buy sends $5 to the IRC! Click here to buy a bag!
As 2020 comes to a close, may we give thanks that we have grown stronger in our commitment to the work of social justice on behalf of our immigrant neighbors.
Anti-Racism Resources

We are compiling an anti-racism resource list of podcasts and reading material to encourage engagement and sustained  attention in the long work of becoming an anti-racist community.

Teen Tidings

Sunday 12/6 at 7:00 PM
Confirmation will hear from Brad and Jen
High School will be hanging out with Tricia and Peter

On this second Sunday of Advent we'll follow Mary, Joseph and the donkey on the road to Bethlehem. For our Circle Time, please bring your favorite nativity set (or favorite piece) to share with everyone. You will also need your second paper Advent candle, flame and glue so we can "light" our candles together.

Compassionate Action

The Compassionate Action team stewards ten percent of all the tithes and offerings given to Mountainside and looks for opportunities to use those funds to support families with need in our communities and around the world. If you have a request on behalf of someone you know, please email the Compassionate Action team: Jordan at

COVID-19 Impacted Housing Assistance

In conjunction with the City of Monrovia, Mountainside is collaborating with other community-based organizations to provide rental assistance to families who have been impacted by COVID-19.  The application process is simple and will provide a one-time award of up to $2000 per qualifying household.

To receive assistance each household must be relationally connected to the Mountainside network and must either:
1) Reside in Monrovia or
2) Have a child who attends school in Monrovia

If you know of a family who may be in need of financial assistance during this difficult time please get in touch with Sonia or Ryan for more details.

Formal Mountainside Small Groups
A Cautious "Yes" turns to "Not Yet"

Given the recent spike in Covid-19 cases nationally and locally, we are putting a pause on our recent decision to affirm Formal Mountainside Small Groups meeting in person.  We will continue to monitor the situation and any changes to Public Health Directives.

If you have questions, please connect with Kevin at, Deborah or Josh.
Managing Risk App
With Covid numbers rising again to new highs, assessing risk becomes more important. If individuals would like help in reducing risk of Covid-19 in any context, this app was developed by physicians at Brown University. It allows people to input different variables to assess risk.
