Bettina Love to speak on social justice, equitable classrooms
Bettina L. Love, Ph.D.Bettina L. Love, Ph.D., one of the leading educational researchers in the areas of how anti-blackness operates in schools, Hip Hop education and urban education, will deliver a keynote address at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education’s 2020 Research Colloquium at the Science Museum of Virginia on Friday, March 6.

SOE launches new center aimed at K-12 STEM education
A student looks at a STEM display.The VCU School of Education is creating a new center that will coordinate efforts across VCU and with Richmond-area school divisions to advance innovative and culturally responsive K-12 science, technology, engineering and math education. The Center for Innovation in STEM Education aims to empower students, particularly those from historically underrepresented populations, to engage in STEM learning experiences and become aware of STEM career opportunities.

Dr. Thoma looks at employment for youth with disabilities
Dr. Colleen Thoma, professor in the Department of Counseling and Special Education.Dr. Colleen Thoma, along with doctoral students Joshua Taylor, Holly Whittenburg, Tonya Gokita and Gabrielle Pickover, examined how interagency collaboration established by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014 impacts the transition services associated with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004.

Denisha Scott: Studying abroad changes life trajectory
Denisha Scott, student in the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership program.Denisha Scott was born in Charlottesville, Virginia. She’s an Altria Scholars progress coach in VCU’s Division of Strategic Enrollment Management, where she helps first-generation students in designated engineering and business majors succeed at VCU, persist in their studies and graduate on time with decreased debt. Denisha has a  bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and is currently pursuing her M.Ed. in Educational Leadership at the VCU School of Education.

Ashley Cox: Expanding the VCU RAMily into Austin, Texas
Ashley Cox, alumna of the VCU School of Education's Master of Teaching program.Ashley Cox, 2013 alumna from the VCU School of Education’s M.T. in Secondary English Education program, says she’s spent her career exploring different aspects of public education and childhood development. Last year, she started working at Austin Achieve High School, a small, tuition-free, open-enrollment public charter school in Austin, Texas and currently teaches geography, a challenge she said she welcomed.
