Our plan to engage our diverse stakeholders
Dear Intermediate District 287 Stakeholders,

The Intermediate District 287 School Board is seeking your input as we begin the important responsibility of hiring a new superintendent. The Board has contracted with SCHOOL EXEC CONNECT to facilitate the search process with an intentional race equity lens. Drs. Kenneth Dragseth, Antoinette Johns, and David Clough of SCHOOL EXEC CONNECT are our partners in this work.

A diverse group of District 287 facilitators will partner with our SCHOOL EXEC CONNECT team to engage the unique stakeholders that make up our diverse school district community. The engagement plan includes individual interviews, focus groups, in-person and virtual public meetings, and a multilingual online confidential survey. These engagement opportunities will take place in mid to late September.
  • Intermediate District Board members
  • School district staff, including union leaders
  • Parents, guardians, and caregivers
  • Students
  • Member district stakeholders, including superintendents, Special Education leaders, teaching and learning leaders, racial equity leaders, and business leaders
  • District partners, such as the Wilder Foundation
  • Racial, language, and LGBTQIA+ affinity groups
To ensure that we gather as many diverse perspectives as possible, we will have affinity spaces available for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC community, and people who speak Spanish and Somali. Live closed captioning will be provided in public virtual meetings, as well as a live sign language interpreter upon request. Please email 287comm@district287.org if you wish to request an ALS interpreter, Somali interpreter, Spanish interpreter or have any other needs.

Additionally, we encourage the entire District 287 school district community to provide confidential written feedback via an online multilingual survey. The survey will be available on the district website, which will then link to a confidential survey site. The survey will be open September 20-October 9, 2021.

Our stakeholders will help to determine the strengths, challenges, and goals to achieve in our Intermediate School District and the characteristics or skills they would like to see in the new superintendent. Using stakeholder feedback, we will develop a profile of the desired skills and characteristics in the next superintendent.

Search Timeline
  • September 15 to November 17, 2021: The position will be advertised, and candidates will be recruited.
  • December 1, 2021: The Intermediate District Board and consultants will meet to review and select candidates for initial interviews.
  • December 2-3, 2021: The Board will interview four to seven recommended candidates.
  • December 3, 2021: The Board will narrow the field to two or three finalists.
  • December 6-8, 2021: Each finalist will be invited for an individual all-day interview process.
Finalist Interview Process
Each finalist will be involved in an all-day interview process including open virtual or in person forums available to staff, students and community members with a final interview conducted by the Intermediate Board. The Board will ask staff, students, and community to provide input into the final selection. We will invite stakeholders to participate in the open question and answer session with each of the final candidates and then complete a feedback form to be shared with each Board member prior to their final interview. Candidates will be assessed using the “Superintendent Profile” developed via the feedback obtained from stakeholder engagement opportunities. We, the Intermediate Board will narrow the choice to one final candidate at the end of the last day’s interview. We plan to act on the new superintendent’s contract at a Board meeting in December 2021.

Contacts: Please feel free to contact Antoinette Johns (612.309.1511), David Clough (847.644.5556), or Kenneth Dragseth (952.210.2790), if you have any questions regarding the search.
