Congregational Church of Soquel

September 2016

Minister
Dear Friends in Faith,
I stepped outside last evening to check my mailbox. As I returned to the house, I said to my wife, “June, it seems like an autumn evening out there. Not sure how to distinguish it from a late summer evening. It’s a change I guess—something special in the air.”

Well, that, “Something special,” is the fall season, and whatever it is exactly—renewed activity, growth, change, new challenges, old friends, fresh ideas, meaningful traditions, the world turning, the Spirit moving—anyway, it’s coming to Congregational Church of Soquel in a big way this September. So let me encourage you to come and be a part of the excitement. We begin on Sunday, September 11, at 9:30 am, gathering in a spirit of worship, learning and community. We dedicate our church school students and teachers and begin a new Life & Worship series, The Big 4: God’s Love in Four Dimensions. Following worship, we’ll enjoy the warmth and friendship of coffee hour in our Parrish Fellowship Hall.

And the, “something special in the air,” I mentioned; well, it keeps making itself known throughout the season: Taste of Soquel: Food and Music for the Common Good, a renewed youth group comprised of some very impressive Middle Schoolers whose time has arrived, another year of Learning Ways Preschool Classes, a new work sponsored by the Mid-County Homeless Coalition designed to provide weekly showers, another season of Hand to Hand, women’s ministry, choir, craft group and much more.

Last spring our church was honored as the Organization Of The Year by the Capitola/Aptos Chamber of Commerce. Our commitment to the community represented by that award is only as strong as the valuable experience of mutual faith we share when we are together. It will be on full display this fall and beyond. So, join us! If you do, I think you will, like me, sense “something special in the air.”

Peace,
Mark Fountain
Minister

Learning Coordinator Report
We are happy that our Church School New Year will start on September 11!

We will start off in the Big Church for a special dedication.  A special activity is planned for all of our students.  We will also have some special treats to celebrate our wonderful new year together learning about how much we are loved by Jesus.
Each Sunday we will start our time together with a special worship time before going to class.  We take our offering, sing songs, work on our bible verse and pray.  On occasion we are treated to a special visit from Reverend Patti where she shares about wonderful stories from the bible.  We also sing once a month in church during Folk Worship time.
We are looking forward to our Christmas Pageant on December 11th.  Thank you Emily Hanson for agreeing to be our leader.

This year’s church school team includes:
Worship  -  Cindy Boram and Joan Macdonald
Preschool – 1st grade  -  Cindy Boram and Robin Gordon
Second -  Fifth grade  -  Joan Macdonald
Middle/High School  -  Emily Hanson and Alison Lucas
Community Service Team  -  Cindy Ruhsam and Gloria Wells  (works with students once a month)
A special thank you to each of them for their dedication to our young people!
I am looking forward to a year full of blessings and so thankful to have the opportunity to work with our children.

With God’s Love,
Cindy Boram
Learning Coordinator

Deacons
The Deacons are excited to have all of you back for our kick off Sunday onSeptember 11th.  Looking forward to having the choir back. I know I will be doing a lot of singing and expect you will too!  We carried on through the summer of course but, now it’s time to get back and get going full blast. We expect to serve everyone possible inside and outside the doors of our church.  How can we do this?  With your help of course

We have Announcers, but could use some more volunteers there (see me if you can help).  Our Readers lead the Responsive Reading eachSunday.  Communion Servers distribute the wine and bread on the first Sundayof the month.  Greeters offer a warm welcome when you enter our church.  It all takes some time and is well worth it. Thank you to everyone who fills in when we ask on short notice!  We also continue to ask for your help in identifying people in need.  Members, friends and anyone that needs help. You are all ministers to the community at large. Please let us know when people are ill or not able to come to church.  The Deacons are good at calling and like to write cards just to stay in touch. Thank you for being our eyes and ears.

Many activities to look forward to now.  We will be worshiping, working and celebrating with you in all of them. We love this time of the year.  I’m already looking ahead to another Advent Season.  What’s this I see?  The Deacons asking for help with the lighting and Hanging of the Greens?  Well, first things first you might say.  And, you’re right. So let’s get going. The Deacons are right there with you!

Faithfully,
Bill Abraham
