National External Diploma Program

In partnership with Hartford Adult Education, Literacy Volunteers has started to offer NEDP preparatory classes in reading, writing, math, and other necessary skill areas!

The NEDP is an alternative high school completion program to the GED.  It is for adults who've acquired their academic skills through life and work experiences and can demonstrate what they've learned. Assessments are performance-based rather than test-based and can be done at the participants own pace. Completion takes an average of 6 months to 1 year and is accepted by most colleges, employers, and military services as a high school diploma equivalent.

Hartford Magazine

Keep an eye out for both of theses releases!

Hunger Action

Our partners at the New Covenant United Methodist Church, which hosts our Wickham site in East Hartford, have been doing amazing work! Food insecurity is a present issue in both of our communities and great strides have been made to help address this problem.
This year the church has been established as a CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program) site through Foodshare.  Once a month, participants aged 60+ who have an income below the Federal Poverty Level, receive a free box of food containing juice, milk, pasta, cereal, rice, peanut butter, cheese, canned meat, and canned fruit and vegetables.
Several farms in the area have also been extremely generous over the past year.  Bob Handel's farm and Futtner's Family Farm, both located in East Hartford, have donated hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to the church to help benefit East Hartford Residents as well as LVGH students.

Many thanks to Reverend Gary Richards for all of his hard work and dedication to our community.  Every month he hosts the EH Hunger Action Team meeting, which is a collection of community partners working together in the fight against hunger.  For more information and to learn how to get involved click here!
