RSL - Rockschool Exams

Rockschool Limited (UK) offers adaptive vocational music training and awards designed for pupils seeking to follow a career path in popular music. Famous alumni include Ed Sheeran, Jess Glynne, Let's Eat Grandma, Takeover Entertainment & Swim Deep. From 2017, Virtuosi's students will now have the option of taking Rock exams with the RSL in addition to Classical with Trinity or ABRSM.

As with ABSRM & Trinity, students are obliged to buy the relevant books (available on with free samples for each grade available for download via the RSL website. Students perform 3 pieces (two of which can be free choice) along with four supporting tests (Technical Work, Sight Reading/Improvisation, Ear Test & General Musicianship). Our first RSL exam period is set for May/June 2017. The first round will be held in Zaandam (Amsterdam), though with sufficient candidates the examiner will reserve a day to come to our Mooof studios in Den Haag.

Interview with a Teacher

In this edition we interview American Harpsichord & Piano Teacher Indigo Smith-Poelz.

So Indigo, what brought you to the Netherlands?
I came here to further my study of baroque music (harpsichord) at the Royal Conservatiore in The Hague.

Since when you are teaching at Virtuosi?

I have began teaching for Virtuosi in September, 2010.

Tell us about one highlight from your career so far?

Attending a masterclass given by Gustav Leonhardt - one of the pioneers who popularised modern interest in baroque music. Unfortunately he passed away just weeks after, so I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity.

Could you tell us one thing your students wouldn't know about you?

Most of my students study piano, so they may not know I started my musical career on the violin! I also play the Ukulele.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy cooking for dinner for my friends, and going to the cinema.

Finally, do you have a practice tip or advice for students?
If you practice a little every day, you will progress far more quickly than if you practice a lot, only once or twice a week.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a cat named Gatta. Here he is!!!
