FUEL FOR THOUGHT
Make the Right Moves with Investments
What do my investments have to do with income tax?

Knowing when to sell appreciating investments, like stock or real estate can have a major impact on your tax picture.

If you sell investments that you have owned for one year or less, any gain will be short-term capital gain that is taxed at the same rate as your ordinary earned income. Ordinary income brackets range from 10% to 39.6%.

Once you have held the investment for more than one year, any gain becomes long-term capital gains and is taxed much more favorably. Taxpayers in the 10% or 15% regular tax brackets generally pay no tax on long-term capital gains, while those in the highest bracket pay 20%.

You can be subject to an additional 3.8% tax if your adjusted gross income (AGI) with some adjustments exceeds certain levels, regardless of your tax bracket.
Did you know? — You may be able to avoid any tax on the appreciation of long-term capital-gains property such as stock if you use it instead of cash to make a charitable gift. You still get to deduct the full value plus avoid potential capital-gain tax of up to 23.8%. To learn more about how we can assist you with meeting your philanthropic goals and how you can help sustain the mission of ACM, please contact Dean Carrell at 253.683.3943 or by email.
