The five minutes that will change your week. Today, let's focus on obstacles to a thankful life.  

Find a quiet space. Sit up tall, and close your eyes. Set a timer for one to two minutes per movement so that you can be fully present (or increase the time if you want a longer experience).  


First, pay attention to God. 

Take slow, deep breaths. Focus on the spot that you feel the breath in your body. 
  • As you breathe in, think, "I will give thanks to the Lord..." 
  • As you breathe out, think, "... with my whole heart" (Psalm 9:1).


Second, ponder your inner world.

Process the following with Jesus:
  • Where has disappointment or bitterness divided my heart?
  • What five things can I thank Jesus for today?


Third, prepare to love others.

Ask Jesus to help you answer the following:
  • What people in my life do I need to thank today?
  • What will I specifically say to them?

A closing prayer:

Father, every good gift comes from you. As I recall your wonderful works in my life, I'm astounded by the specificity of your care, the thoughtfulness of your love, and the extent of your attention. You bless, and you bless, and you bless some more.  

Help me today to see you in the weeds of my life. To experience your blessings in real-time. And to express thankfulness in every waking moment of my day. May gratitude well up inside of me and pour forth like an unstoppable torrent. May thankfulness lead me to a greater awareness of your joyful presence. Finally, empower my gratitude to not stop with you but to extend to those I love.
