The renowned  Film Screenings include new releases - portraying music, movements and history from across the globe, plus a  new addition in the form of the carefully curated WOMEX Film Library.

WOMEX 17 Film Programme Revealed 


Since its renewal in 2015, the WOMEX Film Screenings have become an integral component to WOMEX. Once more, over three days we are creating an intimate space where world music film aficionados can meet and connect with directors, producers and musicians from all over the world to present their films personally. 

This year, the WOMEX 17 Film Screenings feature among others  the International  premiere of  Charco – Songs from the Rio de la Plata and a market screening (exclusively for WOMEXicans only), of Ethiopiques – Revolt of the Soul before its upcoming world premiere. As well as a series of Hibridos short films by Vincent Moon & Priscilla Telmon exhibited as an extended experience throughout the expo.

 WOMEX Film Library Launched for 2017


In addition to the WOMEX Film Programme, we are pleased to announce the launch of the WOMEX Film Library. This extended selection of films have been carefully curated to showcase a diverse range of contemporary world music film,  and are available on on demand and accessible at any time over the course of the expo.

WOMEX On The Road
 
As part of our conference exchange with re:publica, WOMEX director Alexander Walter headed to Dublin and Piranha Arts CEO Frank Klaffs to Thessaloniki, to take part in sessions surrounding the topic of (How) can music still change the world today?

Alexander Walter will also be attending the European Jazz Conference, which takes place between 21- 24 September 2017 at the Cankarjev dom Cultural Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Head of WOMEX Showcases Dhari Vij will also be on the road, attending Mercat de Música Viva de Vic in the city of Vic Catalonia from 13 -17 September 2017 as well as Reeperbahn Festival 20 - 23 September 2017.

Communications director Paul Bräuer, will also be at Reeperbahn Festival moderating a session on what radicalisation online tells us about the future of classical music in digital everyday life.

WOMEX World Tour 
 
 ** Primera Linea postponed**
Breaking news: due to the damages caused by hurricane IRMA, the international music forum Primera Linea in Havana, Cuba has to be postponed. 
New dates are Mon 27 November - Fri 01 December. The event will open with the jazz great Ruy Loppez Nussa y la Academia. A major open-air Salsa concert with the two legendary orchestras Los Van Van & Elito Revé y el Charangón on the Ciudad Deportiva location will close the event! Showcase and conference programme coming soon on www.cuba-primera-linea.com

The eighth edition of Circulart, a yearly space that takes place in the city of Medellin and  platform for Latin American music, have announced their showcase selection for 2017. 20 of the best  in Latin  American music will perform over 3 days (2 - 5 November 2017).
Plus, 116 artists  have been selected for the business rounds that will take place on Sunday, 5 November 2017. See more information here.
The call for proposals for Classical:NEXT 2018 (16 - 19 May, Rotterdam, the Netherlands) is now open!  Once again, the Classical:NEXT team are asking classical and art music musicians, ensembles, speakers, project leaders and more, to submit their future thinking ideas to shape the programme for next year.
Proposals can be submitted for the following formats: Showcases, Club Showcases, Project Pitches and Conference Sessions. Submissions must be made by Friday, 29 September 2017.
London-based Ethiopian three-piece Krar Collective (WOMEX Showcase artist  2011) have teamed up with Paul Weller as part of his three part new release - Mother Ethiopia. Listen to Part 3 ( No Tribe No Colour) with the lead vocals (in Amharic) by Krar's Genet Assefa.
