In Quarter III, we continued to build our momentum - saving lives of pregnant women, newborns, and children under five; educating and empowering youth especially adolescent girls; actively engaging men in leadership to champion the rights and well-being of women and girls; working with midwives and communities to ensure pregnant women deliver in health facilities in the presence of skilled birth attendants providing respectful maternity care. We are investing in our mission!
These achievements are made possible through (1) the partnerships and collaborations we have established and continue to expand on (2) support from host country governments recognizing CSI efforts contribute to local and global goals (3) dedicated CSI team of volunteers (4) generous individuals, organizations & businesses and (5) our passion to serve and make a difference.
Updates from CSI Tanzania
All hands have been on deck to kick off Midwifery Professional Development Short Courses for licensed midwives. The CSI Midwifery first class was made up of ten licensed midwives from Muhimbili, Amana, and Mwananyamala hospitals. Basic midwifery skills such using the partograph, manual removal of placenta, administration of magnesium sulfate and more are day-to-day practices; however, if they are not promptly and correctly applied, the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby are at risk. In collaboration with St. John's University in Dar es Salaam, the CSI Midwifery program was conducted successfully with positive feedback from all midwives emphasizing on need for follow up. Back at CSI headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, the need to strengthen cross-sector collaborations and leverage resources to address known gaps in reproductive-maternal-newborn-child-adolescent health services in underserved communities was amplified at conferences and meetings: USAID Acting On The Call in Washington DC; the Uganda North American Association convention in Boston, MA; Ronald H. Brown African Affairs Series conference in Washington DC; and Reach Every Mother and Child Act meeting in Greenbelt, MD. At these convenings, US-based Cofounder Tausi Suedi highlighted progress made to date, the chronic challenges and the too many preventable deaths and disabilities that continue to occur. In the absence of major funding, Childbirth Survival International has proved to be an important voice and reliable contributor in the global health community.

Teenage and unplanned pregnancies have significantly contributed to preventable maternal-newborn-child deaths and disabilities. They also signal the low rates of contraceptive use, accessibility to reproductive health services, and empowerment of women and girls. CSI's Girl Talk, Girl Power program in Tanzania in collaboration with Jakaya M. Kikwete Youth Park is educating and empowering girls to not only excel in sports but in academics and acquire life skills. Within seven months, the program has reached and served more than 200 girls who regularly access the sports facility. Stay tuned for more. #CSITanzania
Motherless babies' homes are spread out across Nigeria and the first question is why do they even exist? CSI's Saving Lives at Birth program is slowly making ground in Nigeria to save mothers from preventable causes of death because a child's first 1000 days are critical. Men! They are often the master-thinkers and decision-makers in their households and communities. Actively engaging men to be advocates and champions for women and their children is key for women-centered initiatives.
