Dear Tutors,

Thank you for a strong start to 2020! Your time spent with students each week helps them become more confident and enthusiastic about learning, and sets them up for long-term success. We look forward to seeing more student progress in February through April!
Important Logistics
  • Monday, February 17 – Teacher Work Day, No Tutoring
  • Please make a note in your calendar of all CMS holidays. If your tutoring time falls on a day-off, I can always help you reschedule for a different day that week, if your schedule permits.
  • Remember to always arrive on time to your tutoring sessions. This will ensure that your students are only receiving Heart during their allotted time block and don’t miss out on regular instruction from their teachers.
  • Mid-Year Survey – Over 500 tutors completed our Mid-Year Survey, thank you! Your comments and suggestions are helping us improve the program.
Student Spotlight

When Billingsville Elementary students needed to turn in permission forms in order to participate in Heart, a Heart student performed a "commercial" telling his fellow classmates why they should bring back their forms to join Heart Tutoring. When his teacher added "You get to work with a tutor," he corrected her, saying, "No, you get to work with TWO TUTORS!" Thanks to this student's enthusiasm, two of his classmates brought back their permission forms the very next day!
Tutor Tip: Using the Goal Board

This year we introduced Goal Boards as a goal setting and progress tracking tool. Discussing these targets develops growth mindset in your students by allowing them to see the skills they have mastered and those they have not mastered yet. Watch this video of a tutor/student pair discuss the skill they practiced when they reach a goal board label in their notebook. If you want to learn more about growth mindset, read our latest Deeper Dive newsletter here.
Community Updates

Heart has several Community Building Events coming up including an inaugural book club and second screening of the documentary, Resilience. Click here for more information and to RSVP!
We are excited to announce that Kathy Richardson, one of the nation’s leading educators of elementary mathematics and on whose work our program is based, will be visiting us March 16th and 17th! There will be training opportunities for volunteers and a presentation for anyone who would like to learn more about the power of mathematics for elementary students. RSVP Here.
Heart Tutoring is part of a group raising awareness about the 2020 US Census, which takes place from mid-March to April 1st. Please make sure someone from your household takes the census by mail, phone, or online, reporting on those who will be living in your household as of April 1st, 2020. The census is given every 10 years and is tied to federal funding, congressional representation, and other benefits for North Carolina. See more at MeckCounts2020.
Tutors are needed to cover extra shifts at Allenbrook Elementary and Whitewater Academy March 2-6 during UNC Charlotte spring break! Please email Kelsey Ripley if you're interested in helping out during that week.
Heart Tutoring is adding key positions in early 2020 for volunteer outreach and fundraising. Please spread the word to your networks and/or apply.
Thank you for your commitment to student success! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
